Morrisville – Mr. Stephen Payne Getzelmann, 43, passed away unexpectedly after a courageous battle with a Strep A infection on December 5, 2011 at the UNC Burn Center.
Stephen graduated from Chapel Hill High School and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He swam for his high school and college teams. His passions included the love of life, people, helping others, and photography. He was an active member of The Bridge Community Church, playing softball for his church in a church league, and served as an assistant coach for his son’s soccer and T-Ball teams. Stephen held several positions after college which included World Cup Soccer, Bear Com Sports and most recently, Manager, for Lowe’s Home Improvement Store in Raleigh.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife and son, Elizabeth (Beth) Getzelmann and Tyler Robert Getzelmann, both of the home; parents, William and Diana Payne Getzelmann of Chapel Hill; godparents, Linda and Gurney Williams; godmother, Diane Getzelmann Jensen, and several cousins, including Kimberly Williams-Paisley, J. J. Gurney Williams, IV, and Ashley Williams Dodson.
Mr. Getzelmann was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Getzelmann, and Mr. and Mrs. George Richard Payne, all of Chappaqua, NY.
The family would like to thank Rex Hospital’s ICU team and the UNC Burn Center for their extensive and untiring diligence in working with Stephen. The nurses and doctors did all they could to help. Their efforts are greatly appreciated along with The Bridge Community Church with their undying support throughout Stephen’s illness.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at Ephesus Baptist Church, 6767 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh. Officiating will be Pastor Mike Windley. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 – 2:00 pm prior to the service in the church.
